Toyota Prius accounted for over 51% of all the hybrid electric vehicle sales in the year 2012, as reported by ADFC of US Gov.

What is a Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) ?

A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is a class of electric vehicles that utilise a combined power trained i.e. they have both a conventional fuel oil internal combustion engine and an additional electric motors to power the vehicle.

Why were HEVs so popular?

Chart of hybrid electric vehicles from afdc.energy.gov website showing toyoto prius had over 51% market share in 2013-14

HEVs dominated the EV market in a time when the BEV (battery electric vehicle) technology was still as its infancy.

Advantages of HEVs :

# Has fewer emissions compared to traditional car

# Because of a mixed power train setup, they achieve better gas mileage

# It delegates the range issues of a Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV)

# It helps ease the transition of companies and communities into BEV

# Gives people little taste of the future

Components of a Hybrid Electric Vehicle :

The common components in an HEV are:

#1. Engine -

A traditional engine powered by petrol, gas, gasoline or diesel.

#2. Energy storage System (ESS) -

These are in the from of batteries that store the electric power.

#3. Transmission system -

With two separate power sources inside in the hybrid car, this is where the companies get to showoff their creativity and technologies.

#4. Inverter -

It converts the DC power from battery system to AC current for the motors.

#5. Controller -

The brain that controls this elaborate system and tells the power distribution and delivery amount for each motor.

#6. Charging system for the battery

#7. Re-Gen system -

Regenerative breaking collects as portion of the kinetic energy back into the battery when the brakes are applies.

How Does a hybrid electric vehicle work?

There are multiple flavors of how companies attack the load balancing in HEV, I will post a separate article to discuss each method in depth, but in a general sense when we think of HEV we expect:

#1. You push the accelerator pedal, this signals to the controller.

#2. Assuming you are starting from a halt, it delivers power to the electric motors in conjunction to that of the engine,

#3. As electric motors produce greater and more consistent torque output, achieving faster accelerations.

#4. Alternatively, you may run the car on Battery power or engine power only.

Problems of HEV :

#1. Only Electric power range is very less (50-100 miles only)

#2. Still produces a substantial volume of emissions

#3. Makes maintenance and repair rather complicated as it maybe better to get servicing from the OEM themselves

Tesla India : What we know, How it affects the Indian EV market and Tata partnership rumor

Tesla Roadster 2 predicted to hit the streets in 2022   Tesla announced in January 2021 that will come to India, they have reportedly booked an office in Bangalore. A miss-leading tweet, of Tesla and Tata partnering to develop and launch electric cars blew-up the internet.   Tesla sure has a busy start to the new year, but is it ready to face the India crowd? Let’s discuss it.   What do we know about Tesla India? Elon Musk the CEO and Founder of Tesla Inc. confirmed its launch in India thought twitter.   As promised - Elon Musk — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) January 13, 2021 Tesla has been rapidly spreading its wings in the global car market. We saw a surge of almost +500% in Tesla share prices between March 2020 and January 2021; propelling Elon Musk to surpass Jeff Bezos as the richest man alive.   India is the second most populated country in the world and its not in Musk’s nature to miss out on such an opportunity.   How Tesla affects the EV market in India...

INDEPTH : What are Plugin in Hybrids PHEV and How they Work

3 min read INDEPTH : On types of power trains in electric vehicles A typical petrol car gives an average range of 900 KM. Whereas, a Plug-in Hybrid with only 50 KM of ONLY Electric capacity can run 1600+ KM on a full tank! Amazing isn’t it!? Are you confused? Ok, let's discuss it in-depth. What are Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHEV) : BMW 330e a plug in hybrid PHEV, it has 22 miles of electric only range. Let's start by discussing what is the meaning of PHEV. A Plug-in Hybrid is a class of electric vehicle that has two power sources . #1 Conventional IC Engine and #2 Electric motor with short-range capability only. The idea is that you just plug-in the car to the grid, to recharge the battery at the end of each day. This allows you to get the full 1600 KM of range. The early versions of the Chevrolet Bolt were a Plug-in hybrid. A younger me was fascinated by the Bolt; its users would report refuelling maybe once a month! No wait it still fascinates me. Lol. Since then the Chev...
